m/v Axios: A “Wind Ready” bulk carrier

Overview

  • 82,000DWT Kamsarmax Bulk Carrier
  • Yard: Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding
  • Ship Design: CS Marine
  • Class: Lloyd’s Register
  • Client: Blue Planet Shipping
  • Delivered in 2017

Approach

  • Ship owner wished to make their newly purchased vessel “Wind Ready” by installing Anemoi’s Rail Deployment System, ready to receive Anemoi Rotor Sails in the future
  • After assessing the ship design, Anemoi proposed using their Transverse Rail Deployment Systems to ensure port operations would not be affected once the Rotors were installed
  • Anemoi completed full project management:
    • Collaborative design of structural and electrical integration with ship design house
    • Obtaining full Class approval for the system
    • Final inspections and commissioning

Results

  • 4 Transverse Rail Deployment Systems were installed along with Electrical and Control hardware for up to 8 Rotor Sails
  • The installation was completed prior to delivery of the vessel
  • To date, the Rail Deployment Systems have caused no interruption to port operations
  • Minimal maintenance required on any “Wind Ready” vessels

Estimated Savings

If 4 Rotor Sails (3.5m x 25.4m) are installed, the annual savings are projected to be 12% (reduction of 648 tonnes of fuel and 2,077 tonnes of CO2 per year), based on IMO Global Trade and wind probability matrix.
